Purpose of the role
The Accountant reports directly to the Senior Manager: Financial Management and Reporting. The Accountant is responsible for ensuring that all accounts payables and accounts receivables are undertaken within set policies and procedure and ensuring compliance to relevant financial and accounting standards while maintaining up to date, effective and accurate accounting.
Main Responsibilities:
To ensure the achievement of work plans
- Develop policies, processes and standard operating procedures relating to own area of
specialization. - Provide specialist input in the development of Operational Plans and Organisational Strategy.
- Execute work plans and drive the evidence collection in real time.
- Produce reports against the implementation of work plans.
- Respond to audit findings with complete evidence, on time.
- Implement documented data management practices.
- Comply to policies and procedures in the unit.
To coordinate all Accounts Payable activities and tasks
- Coordinate the accounts payable process within the BANKSETA.
- Implement the developed accounts payable management system and process.
- Ensure compliance to the accounts payable management system and process.
- Review and ensure the accuracy of accounts payable batch outputs – correct coding of vendor,
cost centre, general ledger account, invoice and matching these. - Resolve vendor and service provider queries and problems.
- Process the monthly closing of financial records.
- Post all month end information and ensures the accuracy of financial statements.
- Authorise payments within agreed authorisation limits.
- Monitor the timeous payment of creditors and escalates outstanding payments if required to the
Senior Manager: Financial Management and Reporting. - Pay all insurance policies within policy requirements.
To coordinate all Accounts Receivable activities and tasks
- Coordinate the accounts receivable process within the BANKSETA.
- Tracking and resolving outstanding payment issues.
- Compile and review general weekly aging reports in a timely manner.
- Make daily collection calls.
- Compile account analysis reports.
- Compile accurate age analysis report.
- Identify all problematic debtors and have mitigation actions are in place.
- Review significant liability accruals and ensure accuracy of accruals.
- Authorise invoices and ensure that supporting documentation is attached to the invoices.
- Send statements to customers.
To maintain proper functioning of accounting and financial management systems
- Perform monthly reconciliations between the information on the system and financial information.
- Manage cash flow projections and investment administrations within the approved investment policy,
- Maintain a detailed asset register reconciled to the relevant asset accounts and ensure a full fixed
asset count is conducted and reconciled bi-annually.

- Keep up to date with new developments and changes in own field and within BANKSETA.
- Share new information and best practice trends with colleagues.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

Minimum Requirements:
- 5 years’ experience in a Financial environment in a public entity
- A Bachelor’s Degree/equivalent in Commerce, Accounting or Financial Management or similar field (Qualification equal to NQF 7)
